CAUSES OF STRESS FOR CATS
Our cats can be affected by stress, just the same as us! Here are a few common causes:
Changes to their environment or homeWhether you're moving house, moving furniture around or doing a spot of decorating, our cats can be sensitive to changes in their home environment. This can also include having new visitors in the home too. For example, friends coming over to visit, or even the introduction of a new baby (furry, or otherwise)!
Being given too much attentionSome cats enjoy their alone time, they can become stressed if they're on the receiving end of too much attention. This can include being followed, excessively stroked or cuddled. All children should be closely monitored when spending time with cats to make sure they don't go OTT. It's great to get them into the habit at an early age of respecting your pet's boundaries.
FireworksAs we all know, this isn’t just an issue on Bonfire Night. They can go off all year round with various celebrations taking place, although the main firework season extends from October through to New Year. Cats can find the sound of fireworks distressing.
Threats to their territoryIs there a new puss on the prowl in your neighbourhood? Our cats can be very protective over their home turf and the presence of a new cat in their space can be unsettling. This may trigger a fight or flight response which is linked with heightened levels of anxiety.
Visits to the vetThe sights and smells of the vet's is enough to make any pet feel anxious. It could also have something to do with where the vet puts the thermometer...
SIGNS OF STRESS IN CATS
Signs of cat stress include:
Scratching furniture
Urine marking
Puffing up their fur to appear larger
Vocalising - growling, hissing and wailing
Crouching with their belly low to the floor
Dilated pupils
Becoming withdrawn or trying to hide away
Engaging less with humans
Eating and drinking less
Overeating
Vomiting or diarrhoea
These aren't exhaustive lists, nor are these exclusively signs of stress. If you notice any of these changes and you're concerned about your pet's health and wellbeing, please speak to your vet.
