What are the Itch House Rules?

What to expect after applying flea treatment

How to prevent fleas

Fleas are a nasty nuisance, so let’s make sure you kill them for good. Applying preventative treatment to your pet every month ensures any fleas that hop onto your pet are killed quickly.  It’s important to stick to some key steps when applying flea treatment to your pet. Here at Itch, we like to call these the House Rules, and they make sure the fleas on your pet will be gone, for good.

What are the Itch House Rules?

So you’ve applied your spot-on flea solution, now let’s guarantee the treatment will be 100% effective. Stick to these House Rules every time you apply Itch Flea to your pet:

  • Keep' em dry. Your pet can't get wet for 48 hours (this includes walkies in the rain).

  • Don’t touch the treated area. Hands off.

  • No licking the treated area (your pet, not you…).

  • Don't share your bed with your pet on the night your pet is treated.

  • Treat all your pets in your household at the same time, ideally in the evening.

  • Weigh your pet regularly and tell us about any changes so that we can adjust their dose.

What to expect after applying flea treatment

Pets can continue to scratch after flea treatment is applied, for up to 24 hours. Don’t worry, this is just the fleas reacting to the treatment and becoming hyperactive before they die. If your pet continues scratching for a long period of time, even after treatment, they might be flea-allergic. We’d recommend chatting to your vet for diagnosis and treatment if you suspect your pet is struggling.

How to prevent fleas

Having a flea control routine is crucial to always be parasite free, here’s what we recommend:

  • Use reliable flea preventative products

The most effective way to prevent fleas is to keep your pet on a regular flea treatment schedule. This could be a monthly spot-on treatment, like Itch Flea Treatment for Cats and Itch Flea Treatment for Dogs which is vet strength, approved by vets and scientifically proven. Did we mention it can also be delivered straight to your home, every month, for free?

  • Flea-proof your home

Treating your home for fleas is just as important as treating your pet. Did you know, 95% of fleas actually live in your home environment, not on your pet. So using a household flea spray, like the Itch Flea House Spray, to  ensure all adult fleas are killed for up to 2 months after a one-off blast and no flea eggs or larvae can develop for up to 12 months after use.

  • Follow instructions

Follow the instructions on flea prevention products closely, don’t do your own thing! Always apply the correct dose, administer at the right time, and use treatment specific for your pet’s size and breed. A subscription to Itch Flea does all the leg work for you, it is tailored to your pet and delivered for free, exactly when you need it, so you never forget.

  • Regular grooming

Regular grooming not only keeps your pet's coat healthy but also helps you spot any signs of fleas or skin issues early on, which can save you future hassle! We’d recommend brushing your pet with a flea comb, twice a week, to make sure no pest is left on their fur.

  • Maintain a clean environment

Regularly hoovering your home and your car, keeps your space clean and the vibrations cause any dormant flea pupae to hatch. As they develop into adult fleas and search for a host, you can kill them with flea treatment.

It is super important to wash your and your pet's bedding, any linens and upholstery at 60°C folks - no less! Stay on top of cleaning areas that your pet spends a lot of time in, to reduce the chances of infestation.

  • All year round prevention

Fleas absolutely thrive in their peak season but not many realise that they are in fact a problem year-round. Fleas thrive in warm, humid environments, which means you can just as easily be battling a flea infestation in the bleakness of winter in your warm centrally heated home, as in the height of summer. Whichever flea preventative treatments you stick with, make sure you use them all year round!

Fleas are a nightmare, but with regular preventative treatment your pet, home and family can be protected. Fleas are tough parasites to kill, so stick to the Itch House Rules to ensure every dose of flea treatment applied to your pet is 100% effective.
