Why You Should Worm Your Pet?

What is a Worming Tablet?

What is the Ideal Worming Schedule?

The ever so interesting topic of worms, said no one ever. Let’s cut the cr*p, as pet owners worming your animal is not at all that glamorous and it can be a task we very easily forget. As much as this might be the case, doing right by our pet comes first and knowing a little bit more about boring old worms will help you act fast to prevent any serious issues (and of course sky high vet bills).

Worms 101

Worms are nasty little pesticides that come in various forms, including:

  • Roundworms

  • Tapeworms

  • Hookworms

  • Whipworms

These invaders can affect all pets, so don’t think you’re ruled out if you’re a cat person.

Why You Should Worm Your Pet?

Here at Itch, we believe prevention is better than cure so worming your pet regularly is super important to avoid any possible outburst. Without worming treatment, pets can be at risk to a myriad of health issues, with the most common being gastrointestinal problems. Our experts advise that regular worming is essential, even for pets that appear healthy. This is because in the early stages, worm infestations are asymptomatic (meaning your pet might have worms but isn’t showing any obvious signs of illness). Not to mention, certain types of tapeworms can be transmitted to humans - so we are worm-ing you, treat your pet regularly, before it’s too late.

What is a Worming Tablet?

Popped in their mouth, spat back out again, hid in their food and then finally swallowed. This tends to be the usual hassle of giving your pet worming treatment. But how do they work and what ingredients are in worming tablets?

The effectiveness of worming tablets truly lies in their active ingredients, which work to either paralyse or kill the parasites, which your pet then goes on to poo out (gross but the reality).

  • Praziquantel

Praziquantel is a powerhouse of an ingredient which is highly effective against tapeworms - one of the most common types of intestinal parasites in our furry companions. This ingredient performs its magic by causing muscle spasms in the worms, leading to their paralysis and as we said earlier, eventually being rid of through a lovely stinky poo.

  • Pyrantel Pamoate

Pyrantel Pamoate is our choice of fighter for tackling roundworms and hookworms, which attacks the worms’ neuromuscular system, preventing them from attaching to the intestinal walls and eventually exiting from your pet’s bum.

  • Febantel

Febantel (only relevant for dog wormer tablets) is often combined with praziquantel and pyrantel pamoate. Febantel is effective against a wide range of worms, including roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms. It works by disrupting the parasites' metabolism, letting them starve and die.

As much as these active ingredients act like a brick wall to parasites and ensure your pet is on top form, it is normal for some animals to experience mild side effects such as vomiting, diarrhoea, or lethargy. Always consult a vet if you notice any adverse reactions in your pet after administering a worming tablet.

What is the Ideal Worming Schedule?

Worms, worms and more worms...

For most adult dogs and cats, a monthly or quarterly worming schedule will keep the parasites at bay. However, if your pet is at a higher risk of worm infestation due to factors such as hunting, outdoor exposure, or living in a multi-pet household, our experts recommend more frequent worming.

If you are lucky enough to have a puppy or kitten bouncing around your home, you will need to deworm them more frequently during their first few months of life to ensure they are protected against common parasites.

Your routine should also consider keeping good hygiene and sanitation levels of your pet and home to reduce the risk of worm infestation. For example, always get rid of their poo quickly and cleanly, try keep your living space looking more like indoors than outdoors and especially avoid contact with any animals that may be infected with worms.

If you don’t already, protect your pets and treat for worms with Itch Wormer for Dogs and Itch Wormer for Cat.
