How to prevent fleas coming back

Annoying, blood-sucking creatures in Downing Street? - And no,we’re not talking about politicians. In Liz Truss’ recently released memoir, she claims Number 10 was infested with fleas thanks to Boris Johnson’s poor little dog, Dilyn. Clearly he didn’t have a subscription to Itch. Showing us the ex Prime Minister was clueless in the face of a flea infestation. We’re here to help you get more clued up than Bojo. Here’s what to do if you find yourself the unlucky target of a flea infestation, and more importantly, how to stay one step ahead.

What are fleas?

Did you know 95% of fleas live in your home, not on your pet?

Fleas are wingless insects that survive by feeding on the blood of animals and humans. With their remarkable jumping ability and knack for reproduction, they can quickly infest homes and pets, causing lots of discomfort and irritation.

It’s incredibly easy for your pet to pick up a flea. They hop easily from one pet to another. They’re in your garden, in the park on wildlife or you can even walk one into your home on your shoe! Which means even house cats aren’t safe!  Once they’ve got us and our pets on the hop, they multiply FAST! Just 5 fleas on an untreated pet can multiply to one million fleas in your home in just 4 weeks!

Fleas are much more active in our environment once the weather starts to warm up, but they’re a hazard all year round, thanks to our cosy, centrally heated homes.

How to get ahead of fleas before infestation strikes (aka. What Boris should have known)

  • Treat your pets

Start by regularly treating your pets with a flea control product, such as vet approved, scientifically proven treatments, like Itch Flea Treatment for Dogs and Itch Flea Treatment for Cats.

  • Clean thoroughly

Hoover your home regularly, paying particular attention to areas where your pets spend time. This will help remove flea eggs, larvae, and adult fleas from your carpets and furniture.

  • Wash bedding and fabrics

Regularly wash your pet's bedding, as well as any other fabrics they come into contact with, in hot water (60 degrees minimum) to kill fleas and their eggs.

  • Treat your home

Consider using flea control products, such as insecticidal sprays or powders, to treat your home and garden. Itch Flea Home Spray offers effective, long-lasting protection - after just one application, our flea spray will continue to kill adult fleas for up to 8 weeks and put a halt to the development of flea eggs and larvae for up to 12 months.

  • Chat to a professional

If your flea infestation is particularly severe, or if your efforts to eliminate the fleas are unsuccessful, speak to the team of flea fanatics at Itch. We’re specially trained in veterinary medicines advice and we’re here to help you stay flea free forever.

How to prevent fleas coming back

  • Continue flea prevention: Keep up with regular flea prevention treatments for your pets to prevent future infestations. If you need reminding to protect your pet, try the Itch Flea plan for a personalised subscription of regular flea treatment. Delivered free. To your Door. Every Month. So you never forget.

  • Maintain cleanliness: Continue to hoover and clean your home regularly. Try to wash your pet's bedding and fabrics every few weeks to remove any flea eggs or larvae that may be present.

  • Grab your gardening gloves: Consider planting flea-repellent flowers in your garden that deter fleas to hang out, like Citronella and Chamomile.

  • Eyes open, ears perked: Keep an eye out for any signs of fleas, such as flea droppings or excessive scratching in your pets, and act quickly if you spot a problem!

Don’t be the talk of the town (or someone else’s memoir), take preventative measures to ensure fleas have no place in your home and on your pet.

Get rid of fleas, ticks AND lice... and stop them coming back!

Fleas, ticks and lice can be a nightmare, but with the right approach, you can take control and rid your pets and home of these bothersome pests. Remember that parasites can be persistent, so patience and regular treatment will be your best friends! By addressing both your pet and their environment, you can ensure a flea-free and comfortable living space for both your furry companion and your family.
